Representatives of the local self-government and the public utility company "Komunalije" in Sremska Mitrovica joined the eco-ambassadors of the "O-DVA-JA-MO" project and the pupils of the Agricultural and Forestry and Chemistry Schools on Ćire Milekića Square to remind citizens of the importance of this project for the local community, summarize the results, and listen to the opinions of fellow citizens about the quality of the waste management service.
Sremska Mitrovica is one of the four municipalities in the Srem-Mačva region where this project began to be implemented in 2022.Through this project, Sremska Mitrovica received two new vehicles for the collection and removal of dry waste, 7571 blue bins and 133 blue containers for paper, plastic, and metal, and 112 yellow containers for glass.According to Tamara Milković, the spokesperson of the PUC "Komunalije", the Project for Household Waste Separation "O-DVA-JA-MO" has improved the waste management system in Sremska Mitrovica.
According to data starting from August 2022, a total of 155.8 tons of recyclable waste has been collected."This is a very large quanity and it is growing month by month. We are very satisfied with the participation of our fellow citizens in the Project and their reaction, that is, they are very willing, they understood the benefits of using the blue bin, we are glad that the people of Laćarak responded also to this project, the first collection will start this month, so that even more quantities will be separated and will not permanently end up at the landfill," added Ms. Milekić.
The "O-DVA-JA-MO" project is implemented in 17 municipalities in Serbia with the support of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Serbia, the European Union and the Embassy of Sweden. The goal of the project is to recycle part of the waste generated in households, in order to reduce the amount that ends up in landfills and increase the recycling rate in these municipalities to 15%.The Waste Management Program in Serbia 2022-2031, adopted by the Government of Serbia as part of the EU accession process, aims to improve the municipal waste management system through an increased rate of recycling, reduced disposal of biodegradable waste in landfills and reduced disposal of waste in unhygienic landfills.
