Long-term Support
The European Union provides the greatest financial support for environmental protection in Serbia, a fact that few citizens know.
From 2000 until today, funds have been invested in the preservation and control of air quality, wastewater treatment, remediation of landfills and waste, drinking water supply for over a million citizens, remediation of medical waste and areas affected by the 2014 floods.
The EU is Serbia's main partner in implementing reforms in the environmental sector, but also comprehensive reforms in Serbia in the last 19 years. However, the vast majority of Serbian citizens are not aware of that fact.
That is why the Delegation of the European Union, together with the Ministry of European Integration and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, cities and municipalities, and non-governmental organizations that diligently deal with environmental protection, launched a campaign to show how to concretely protect the natural beauties of Serbia.
Environmental standards, which are among the highest in the world, bring numerous benefits to EU citizens. The European Union and national governments have a clear vision. The plan is to achieve great goals by 2050, with the support of research programs, legal provisions and funding.
Through the protection, conservation and improvement of natural resources, the plan is to transform the EU into an economy that is green, competitive and resource efficient, with reduced carbon dioxide emissions. The pressure and risks to the health of citizens that are related to the environment are reduced. Work continues on several fronts to protect endangered species and nature, provide safe drinking water and personal hygiene, improve air quality and waste management, and reduce the effects of harmful chemicals.
By protecting the environment, through innovation, new opportunities for work and employment are created, which stimulates further investments. "Green growth" is at the heart of EU policy, to ensure sustainable, environmentally sound economic development. The EU also plays a key role in promoting sustainable development globally.
Our intention is to invite people in Serbia to look around and to move to protect the environment for themselves, their families and future generations. The EU encourages and supports reforms when it comes to environmental protection in Serbia, but also donates the construction of important facilities for the protection of watercourses, air, land and nature in general in Serbia.
Nature knows no borders and is the common responsibility of all of us who live in Europe. Only as partners can we protect our nature for generations to come, who deserve to enjoy the natural beauty of Serbia, breathe clean air and drink unpolluted water. Together - we can achieve that goal.
