Transnational Cooperation Adriatic-Ionian (ADRION)

Adriatic-Ionian Initiative was established in 2000, and covers eight Partner States, of which four are EU Member States (Croatia, Greece, Italy and Slovenia), three are candidate countries (Albania, Montenegro, Serbia) and one is a potential candidate country (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Builds on Adriatic-Ionian Initiative the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR) is a macro-regional strategy adopted by the European Commission in 2014. The Strategy aims at creating synergies and fostering coordination among all territories in the Adriatic-Ionian Region.

The Region is a functional area primarily defined by the Adriatic and Ionian Seas basin. Covering also an important terrestrial surface area, it treats the marine, coastal and terrestrial areas as interconnected systems. With intensified movements of goods, services and peoples port hinterlands play a prominent role. Attention to land-sea linkages also highlights impacts of unsustainable land-based activities on coastal areas and marine ecosystems.

ADRION boosts projects results by building thematic networks, which allow exchange of practices and create synergies among projects dealing with complimentary thematics. Those networks are called “ADRION Thematic Clusters” .

Serbia assumed the 1-year chairmanship of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative from June 1, 2019, and the priorities during the Serbian presidency were transport and energy integration.
