European Mobility Week: Public Spaces for Everyone!

This year, the European Mobility Week kicks off with the enduring slogan “Let’s Move Better” and centers on the topic of public surfaces and spaces.

What does that actually mean? Public spaces, pedestrian and bicycle lanes, recreation sites, lakes and squares belong to all of us – whether we are on a bicycle, scooter, rollerblades or simply walking. Smart movement means preserving health and the environment – we all share the same task.

From September 16 to 22, throughout Serbia, we celebrate the European Mobility Week, an initiative that promotes sustainable and healthy urban mobility. So far, this year, 32 municipalities are joining, which indicates an interest in creating cities without congestion, with functional common green spaces.
EU Ambassador Emanuele Giaufret stated: “As Serbia joins all other countries in Europe in celebrating the European Mobility Week 2024, we are reminded of the importance of sustainable transport for both our environment and our communities. The European Mobility Week encourages us all to rethink how we move within our cities and to embrace cleaner, smarter transport solutions. The European Union remains committed to supporting Serbia in its efforts to promote green mobility, reduce emissions, and improve urban life. Together, we can create healthier, safer, and more sustainable cities for all citizens. I encourage everyone to actively participate in this year’s events and to contribute to a better future for our planet.”

“Like every year during Mobility Week, I invite all cycling enthusiasts to join us in promoting a healthy lifestyle and alternative transportation! In order to ensure better and safer participation in traffic for our children, we have prepared interactive events on Ada and in the European House in Belgrade. There will be an agility training ground on two wheels, as well as cycling in the virtual world via the online Zwift platform,” said Ivan Stević, a four-time participant in the Olympic Games in road cycling and Serbia’s most decorated cyclist.

Throughout the week, a number of activities are traditionally organized across the country. Bike rides, walks, workshops, exhibitions and other interesting events aim to encourage citizens to use alternative modes of transport, such as bicycles, public transport or walking. Sustainable mobility is the key to a healthier environment and better quality of life. By reducing the use of cars, we reduce air pollution, noise and traffic congestion, and we also promote a healthier lifestyle.

What can we expect?

For all cycling and sustainable transport enthusiasts, Novi Sad offers many opportunities during the European Mobility Week. The main event on September 20 at SPENS includes the “Critical Mass” and “Tour de Fruška”, which go through the beautiful landscapes of Fruška Gora. Visitors will be able to participate in educational workshops on traffic rules and first aid, as well as free bicycle service. That day will be an ideal opportunity to explore the city on two wheels.

Belgrade will host various events during the European Mobility Week. On September 17 at Ada Ciganlija, visitors can participate in educational and promotional cycling activities, including the interactive “Polygon” course and family ride with Olympic cyclist Ivan Stević. Also, on September 21, the European House in Belgrade organizes a simulation of cycling through European landscapes, using professional bicycles, smart applications and large LCD screens for interactive experience.

In Belgrade, the events are organized by the EU Delegation to Serbia, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the “EU for Green Agenda in Serbia” project, as well as the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities (SCTM), the Ministry of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure, and the Sports Association „Tour de Fun“.

Car-Free Day in Niš on September 20 will be celebrated in Vožda Karađorđa Street, where participants will be able to enjoy a variety of activities organized by local institutions, sports clubs and artists. In addition, on September 22, a bicycle tour “Ride through Niš” will be organized and it will include a 10 km long track, activities for children and sports games. These and other events provide an excellent opportunity to enjoy cycling, active participation in local initiatives, but also for learning and prizes.

Since its launch in 2002, EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK has helped thousands of towns and cities across Europe and beyond to raise awareness about sustainable mobility and encourage behavioural changes in favor of walking, cycling, and public transport. So far, 1,678 towns and cities from 42 countries have registered to participate this year, with registration still open for additional towns and municipalities. Last year, 3,351 towns and municipalities from 45 countries participated, with 1,182 car-free days implemented.
