Training on detecting vehicle smuggling held in Niš

From November 12 to 15, 2024, a specialized training program on detecting vehicle smuggling was held in Niš, gathering 20 representatives from the Border Police Directorate. The training aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of participants in identifying and preventing vehicle smuggling at border crossings.

On the first day, the sessions focused on an introduction to vehicle smuggling issues, identifying vehicles through VIN numbers and other markings, indicators of possible fraud, using vehicle search databases, and analysing registration documents and license plates.

The second day cantered on detecting smuggling methods for common vehicle models, with special attention given to German manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen, as well as vehicles made in the USA, France, and Japan. The day concluded with a review of smuggling practices involving other types of vehicles and heavy machinery often targeted for illegal transport.

The third day addressed practical topics, including vehicle inspection plans, OBD diagnostics for identification, and real-life examples from police work. On the final day, participants applied their newly acquired skills during practical exercises at the Gradina border crossing, focusing on detecting smuggled vehicles under real traffic conditions.

This training marks a significant step forward in strengthening the capacity of the Serbian Border Police to combat vehicle smuggling and improving border security across the country.

The training was organized as part of the "EU Support for Efficient Border Management" project, funded by the European Union.
