Construction of the Regional Waste Management Centre (RWMC) for Subotica district

Summary

Subotica region has the population of 260,000. It is estimated that every household (an average household in Vojvodina has 3 members) annually produces 1,000 kg of waste. Still, only 15% of this waste is recycled, according to the Ministry of Environmental Protection. That is why it was essential to construct a regional waste management centre that improves the waste management system that will ultimately result in a cleaner and safer environment in Vojvodina. Project includes construction of a landfill body, waste separation plant, composting plant, roads, plateau and surface water collection, wastewater treatment, and purchasing necessary mobile equipment for efficient performance of the RWMC.

The municipalities of Subotica, Bačka Topola, Mali Iđoš, Čoka, Kanjiža and Senta have agreed to act together to prevent waste production, minimize waste production at its source, reuse, recycle and use waste for energy and deposit it permanently. In accordance with the Agreement on the Cooperation of Municipalities, an agreement was reached to form a centralised sanitary landfill in line with national and European standards in creating RWMC aimed at protecting the health of the citizens and the environment, local land, water and quality of air. Cooperation between municipalities in resolving long-term environmental issues was one of the major benefits of this project.
