Summary
Surface water quality monitoring in Serbia has a long history dating as far back as the 1960s. Since adoption of the new Water Act in 2010, there have been activities to include the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive into the monitoring programme. This process has not been completed as the number of water quality monitoring stations has been permanently reduced due to lack of capacities (human resources, technical equipment and similar) and significant cuts in budget allocation. Monitoring frequency is 12 times per year for streams and rivers and once to three times per year for lakes and reservoirs. Focus of the monitoring parameters is ecological and chemical status of water, as per EU Directives requirements. Experts estimate that mora than 1200 surface water quality monitoring stations would be required for regular monitoring.
This project enables the authorised national institution, the Serbian Environmental Protection Agency, to collect, update and process water quality monitoring results from the national network for reporting on national and EU level.
