Summary
Improving the overall length of proceedings and decreasing the number of backlog cases leads to a more efficient court functioning, in line with the EU accession requirements. The EU support will strengthen capacities of the Supreme Court of Cassation, the High Judicial Council, the Ministry of Justice, the Judicial Academy of Serbia, four appellate courts, 25 higher courts, 66 basic courts, mediation centres and mediators.
Support to the Supreme Court of Cassation in implementing the programme for backlog reduction and prevention will ensure that trials are conducted within reasonable time.
The project improves the use of mediation by courts, by increasing the understanding of the Alternative Dispute Resolution benefits among judges, court administration, lawyers and citizens.
Another important area for improving the efficiency of the justice system is harmonisation and uniform application of case-law by providing on-the-job mentoring and enriching the SCC case-law database.
