What is it about?
SSerbia has some of the most important rivers in Europe.According to the number of countries belonging to it, the river basin of the Danube is the biggest in the world. In Serbia, the length of the Danube river flow, the second biggest European river, is 588 kilometers. The main tributaries of the Danube are the Velika Morava, the Sava and the Tisa.
The plan for water management for the river basin of the Danube, which was adopted by all the Danubian countries in 2009, and amended in 2015, assumes specific goals and measures. The citizens of the region must be protected from catastrophes, such as floods and industrial accidents, through integrated control of water resources.During
the year 2000, the European Union established a Framework Directive on Waters
(FDW), which represents a key regulation in the area of modern and ecologically
acceptable water management in Europe. As a country candidate for membership,
Serbia must implement all the directives of the EU, including the FDW. This
project will provide aid in the advancement of the quality of water in Serbia
by respecting the principles of the FDW. In order to achieve this, it is
necessary to strengthen the capacities of the Republic’s Water Directorate, The
Public Water Management Company of Serbia ``Srbijavode``and the Water
Management Company ``Vode Vojvodine``.
In
order to make the process of the implementation of this challenging directive
easier, Serbia has applied for aid via the Twinning project of the EU, led by
Germany as the main project partner, while Austria and Holland are junior
partners on the project.
